In a season which saw all eight National League clubs claim at least one & no more than two of BCEW’s National Level end of season awards Kent’s Tom Barton won Partially Sighted Player of the Year for the first time. Tom’s all round performances this season meant he won just his second BCEW award after previously being named Most Promising Player of the Year in 2022.
Sussex’s Dave Daniels kept the current longest run of success going as he won Total Player of the Year for the fourth successive season, his seventh award overall. Northants captain David Howells, who won Partially Sighted Batter & Partially Sighted Fielder of the Year, joined Dave D on seven awards as did Lois Turner of Yorkshire who won Women’s Player of the Year to add to her 2024 Development League Bowler of the Year award.
Sussex’s other winner was Si Ledwith who added Low Partial of the Year to his previous successes in the Wicketkeeper category. Shoaib Nasir of Lancashire completed a unique double by winning Total Batter of the Year in the same season as he claimed that same award at Development level.
Adrian Snelgrove won an award for the second season in a row, last season it was for his batting but in 2024 it was Total Bowler of the Year. Durham VICC had success too as they were awarded the prestigious BCEW Spirit of Cricket Award.
London Metro & Surrey VICC won two awards each, for Surrey Ryan West retained Wicketkeeper of the Year whilst Shaqir Iqbal won Most Promising Player of the Year. Metro’s Mo Ghalib also retained his award as Partially Sighted Bowler of the Year with his teammate Sam Hoskin’s success as Total Fielder of the Year his first award at national level.
This season’s umpire of the Year was named as Fiona Shone who has excelled in her first season of VI cricket, whilst the outstanding Seb Egan won Scorer of the Year for the first time. Fiona & Seb show the quality of officials BCEW can now boast, something we are very thankful to Neil Robson from the Umpires Panel & Paul Toplis from the Scorers Panel for, we also thank both for all of the hours they put in this season to ensure that every game had officials.
Gav Griffiths was 2024’s inductee into the Blind Cricket Hall of Fame, for over 30 years Gav was one of, if not the best, totally blind player in the game. He captained multiple clubs, was part of the first England VI Cricket team & he’s won everything there is to win in VI cricket several times over & with multiple different teams.
The Charles Ronayne Award for Outstanding Contribution to VI Cricket was handed out to a trio of deserving individuals during 2024. Darshak Patel received the award for several years outstanding work as an umpires appointer for BCEW. Doug Beebe was recognised for more than a decade of umpiring all across northern England as well as for his voluntary work on behalf of blind cricket. Lynne Newell’s award was in thanks for all of her hard work to set up Worcestershire’s VI team and a decade of managing that team.
