Metro skipper Rory Field is one of the first eleven winners of the MCC Community Cricket Hero awards.
The search for award winners run by the MCC in conjunction with The Cricketer magazine, was launched in March to celebrate the vast number of people whose work for the grassroots game makes it happen for the benefit of many more.
A full playing XI of winners was selected by the panel of selectors: MCC President Stephen Fry, former England cricketers Claire Taylor and Mike Gatting, Director of the MCC Foundation Sarah Fane, Director of Cricket and Operations at MCC Jamie Cox, and Huw Turbervill, Editor of The Cricketer magazine.
Rory has been involved in Blind Cricket for many years – playing first for his native South Africa where he was part of the team who won the first blind cricket world cup in 1998. He moved to England and has 18 England caps & had a spell as head coach of the England VI team.
For the past two decades Rory has developed & managed London Metro’s teams in VI cricket, playing his part in Metro becoming the first club to be able to field two separate sides in BCEW competitions, an example that a trio of other clubs have since managed to replicate.
The winners were special guests of Stephen Fry at Lord’s to watch the first day’s play at the England v Ireland LV= Insurance Men’s Test match from the prestigious President’s Suite.
MCC President Stephen Fry commented: “We had an incredible response to the campaign and I want to thank everyone who sent in nominations and took part. It really brought home the amazing work that is done by countless individuals, many of them volunteers, to support our wonderful grassroots game.”
