First Round
Durham Viper Jets & Yorkshire Vikings both progressed when their opponents were unable to fulfil first round fixtures.
London Metro (174/4) beat Cheshire Cobras (173 All Out) by 6 wickets
Cheshire’s debut in the competition was a big success as they pushed a very experienced Metro side to the limit. A brilliant 111 not out by Howard Greenhill led the Cobras to a challenging total which the Londoners only overhauled with 19 balls to spare. Nick Ebbeck top scored in the reply with 50 as John Prashar took 3-29.
Somerset VICC (222/6) beat Surrey VICC (95 All Out) by 127 runs
Another promising cup debut, this time by Surrey & another 111 not out, this time by Rob Crisp. Crisp led Somerset’s innings to a total that was always likely to be out of reach despite 14 year old Storme Dunford taking two wickets including that of England’s Ed Hossell. In response Surrey never managed to build a platform thanks to a superb bowling display from Somerset total Steve Cook who tore through the batting order with a remarkable 5-13.
Quarter Finals
Lancashire went through to the semi finals after Durham were unable to fulfil their quarter final.
London Metro (180 All Out) beat Warwickshire Bears (175 All Out) by 5 runs
A classic quarter final was in the end settled by a brilliant performance from Metro total Amit Amin. Matt Dean top scored with 52 whilst Justin Hollingsworth (4-28) & Luke Sugg (3-27) took most of the wickets as Metro set a decent total. Warwickshire appeared to be cruising in response thanks to 346 & 45 from Hollingsworth & Sugg opening the innings for Warwickshire before both were caught by Amit. Gareth Jones took 4 wickets but it was left to Amit to take his second wicket, that of Gerald Porter, to snatch the narrowest of victories.
Sussex Sharks (201/0) beat Somerset VICC (200/5) by 10 wickets
In a batsman dominated game Somerset would have felt that they’d set a strong target thanks to Ed Hossell’s 110. However Sussex openers Dan Field (109 not out) & Joe Harrison (70 not out) decimated the bowling attack to reach the semi finals with 6.1 overs to spare.
Yorkshire Vikings (289/7) beat Gloucestershire Growlers (183 All Out) by 106 runs
George Ferguson’s 129 helped national league Yorkshire set a target that was always going to be too much for their Regional League opposition, despite Bob Henderson claiming 3-29. An excellent 96 not out from Dan Hopkins kept the Growlers interested for a while but John Garbett’s 3 wickets finally brought proceedings to an end.
Semi Finals
London Metro (264/0) beat Yorkshire Vikings (263/2) by 10 wickets
As this summer’s heatwave turned cricket pitches into roads few games saw more batsman domination than this one. Over 525 runs were scored in less than 50 overs with just 2 wickets falling. For Yorkshire Nathan Jameson blasted 162 not out, supported by 63 from Chris Ashhburn. Then Metro rocketed past the target in less than 20 overs with both batsmen finishing not out, Matt Dean on 166 & Nick Ebbeck on 73.
Sussex Sharks (115/2) beat Lancashire Lions (112 All Out) by 8 wickets
Following the competition’s theme of impressive performances from totals this game was won by Sussex’s totals. Ian Morris (3-38) & David Daniels (3-42) ripped through Lancashire’s batting line up to leave a moderate target. In reply Dan Field & Toby Collins both finished 37 not out as Sharks eased home with 12.3 overs to spare.
