BBS Primary Club National Knockout Cup Final 2012
By Dave Gavrilovic
Warwickshire Bears retained the BBS Primary Club National Knockout Cup with a thrilling 9 run win over Yorkshire VICC at Pentland Gardens, Hereford.
On a rare dry day Warwickshire were sent in to bat by a low sighted Yorkshire side containing just 5 partially sighted players to Warwickshire’s 7.
Yorkshire’s brave decision to bowl first paid off as they had the Bears in early trouble with 3 early wickets. When Luke Sugg was run out attempting a careless second run Warwickshire were in deep water at 51/4. An attacking innings from Nathan Foy brought his side back into the game, but he was dismissed for 46 as Bears were bowled out for just 132. Taf Naqvi, John Garbett & Alex Towers shared the wickets in an excellent bowling performance.
Yorkshire also lost early wickets and found themselves 9/2 in reply before opening batsman Taf Naqvi took control. Naqvi’s mix of well judged singles & smashed boundaries took the Yorkshiremen into a dominant position, at one stage 90/3.
Naqvi was 5th out for 43 as the innings started to faulter with the score at 93/5. Yorkshire’s tale tried their hardest but in the end the last 7 wickets fell for 33 runs as they missed their target reaching just 123 All Out. It was a strong bowling and fielding performance from Warwickshire led by 3 wickets & a catch from Justin Hollingsworth.
Taf Naqvi was named partially sighted man of the match with Nathan Foy winning B1 man of the match for the first time in his illustrious career.
As usual it’s a massive thank you to the Primary Club, without their generous funding there would be no chance of staging this competition which is now the longest running blind cricket competition in the world.
