2011 Warwickshire Bears beat South Wales Dragons

BBS Primary Club National Knockout Cup Final 2011
By Dave Gavrilovic

The final of the 2011 British Blind Sport Primary Club National Knockout Cup took place at the County Ground, Bristol on a sunny day in August.

Warwickshire Bears won the toss and chose to bowl first. The South Wales Dragons started slowly as they were only able to reach 36/1 after 10 overs. The Bears bowled tightly and fielded well meaning only one Dragons player was able to get any significant score. That player was Damion Corrigan and he finally ended the 33 year wait for a century in the cup final. Corrigan played the ball around well and when the bad balls came he smashed them to the boundary, ending up 109 not out. Dave Wood chipped in well at the end of the innings with Mark Turnham and Justin Hollingsworth the most impressive with the ball for Warwickshire, As Dragons finished on 182/5.

Warwickshire lost 3 early wickets in reply, but they scored plenty of runs at the same time. Luke Sugg batted throughout the innings but with wickets continuing to fall the Bears looked in trouble at 122/5. However Dave Powers with 25 not out and Sugg with 77 not out saw their side to a 5 wicket victory to lift the cup for the first time. Howard Greenhill put up a good fight for Dragons with a wicket and 2 catches.

Luke Sugg and Mark Turnham won partially sighted and totally blind man of the match respectively, with Gloucestershire’s county championship winning wicketkeeper Jonathon Batty presenting the trophies.

Our thanks to everyone at Gloucestershire CCC for all their hard work to make our final such a success, as well as of course to the Primary Club without whose fantastic support none of this would be possible.
