19 year old David Howells was named Partially Sighted Player of the Year & retained the Partially Sighted Fielder of the Year award as Northants Steelbacks were the biggest winners in BCEW’s National Level Awards, whilst Kent Spitfires trebled the number of awards their club have ever won.
Howells was outstanding with bat, ball & in the field to double his tally of End of Season awards, whilst Gerald Porter (Wicketkeeper of the Year for a sixth time) & Mark Turnham (Total Bowler of the Year) ensured Northants won the most awards for the second year in a row.
Kent claimed just their second ever award when Tom Barton won Most Promising Player of the Year after a brilliant season with the bat, they then added a third ever trophy as Amin Afshari added Total Batter of the Year to his previous fielder award.
Dave Daniels retained Total Player of the Year following a phenomenal season with the ball, his teammates Mark Oliphant (Total Fielder of the Year) & Alex Towers (Partially Sighted Bowler of the Year for his prominent role in Sussex’s National League Title win) meant Sussex earned three awards.
It was also a successful season for Lancashire Lions as Tahseen Sabir, the top run scorer in VI cricket this season, won Partially Sighted Batter of the Year, whilst Sheraz Chohan won Low Partial Player of the Year for a record fifth time.
Lois Turner of Surrey VICC was again the stand out candidate as she won Women’s Player of the Year for the sixth time.
There were only two first time winners in 2022, Mark Oliphant & Tom Barton, whilst Dave Daniels, Gerald Porter, Lois Turner & David Howells (Partial Fielder) retained the awards they won in 2021.
BCEW’s Umpires & scorers were also celebrated, Hughie Evans, who has superbly umpired numerous games in the North of England in recent years, won Umpire of the Year for the first time. Scorer of the Year also went to a first time winner, John Egan, who has been an excellent scorer for Lancashire across several seasons.
Roger Barker was awarded the Charles Ronayne Award for Outstanding Contribution to VI Cricket, as well as being one of BCEW’s top umpires & traveling all over the country to officiate matches Roger has also taken on match manager & match referee roles in recent seasons, meaning he has played a big role in the success of a number of events over the past four years.
across the last three seasons.
2022 has been a tough season for Yorkshire Vikings, but they continue to play the game in the right way & for a third time won the BCEW Spirit of Cricket Award.
