Somerset & Sussex Share Spoils in BCEW National Level Awards

Ed Hossell & Dave Daniels headlined a triple success for both Somerset & Sussex in BCEW’s end of season awards.

Hossell’s partially sighted player of the year award was his fifth success in that category, whilst Daniels total player of the year win was his third in a row. Ed extends his lead as having won the most BCEW end of season awards, he’s won 9 now, whilst Dave’s award was his sixth, joint third overall with amongst others this season’s low partial player of the year, Sheraz Chohan from Lancashire Lions.

Emma Gilfoyle from Durham VICC won women’s player of the year, her & Durham’s first national level award, whilst wicketkeeper of the year also went to a first time winner, Ryan West of Surrey VICC.

Sussex’s other two awards, both for fielder of the year, went to Dan Field (partially sighted) & Ian Morris (total), whilst Somerset’s other trophies went to Adrian Snelgrove (total batter of the year, 14 years after his previous win in that category) and Rob Crisp (most promising player of the year).

Mo Ghalib of Metro won partially sighted bowler of the year, David Howells of Northants Steelbacks claimed partially sighted batter of the year & Kent Spitfires Amin Afshari was named total bowler of the year.

As always BCEW also honour our outstanding officials and volunteers, this season’s umpire of the year award went to Yolanda Harris whilst Beccy Ross won scorer of the Year. We sincerely thank all of our umpires and scorers for their fantastic work across the 2023 season.

Whilst they didn’t win awards this year we would also like to highlight Roger Barker who umpired 17 domestic matches and 11 international ones, by far the most any BCEW umpire has ever stood in a single season. Also Neil Robson who has done an incredible job ensuring as many games as possible had umpires in what has been the most chaotic season in VI cricket history.

This season’s winner of the Charles Ronayne Award for Outstanding Contribution to VI Cricket was presented to Geoff Ridgway, Geoff is a volunteer who does an enormous amount to support the England Women’s team as well as Yorkshire Vikings & previously Derbyshire Owls.

The BCEW Spirit of Cricket Award was won by Metro Devils, who fielded a large number of new players in 2023 but still showed excellent sportsmanship throughout.

We would also like to thank Paul Toplis for his efforts in arranging scorers for all matches this season as well as his work on Play Cricket.
